UK University Rankings FAQ

Why are some UK universities ranked so far apart in the domestic rankings and their UK university rankings in the world? For example: Loughborough University is ranked in the top 10 in the UK, but it is out of the top 100 in the world?

Because the world university rankings are based on research, while the UK university rankings are based on student experience and career prospects. For details, please refer to the UK university rankings glossary to see how different rankings are ranked. Want to find a university with good world and UK university rankings? Are UK university rankings linked to tuition fees?

The British government began to implement the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) in 2017. If British universities reach the average level in the following 6 indicators, they can increase tuition fees! The 6 major indicators of TEF refer to the teaching level of professors, the support of British universities for students, whether the courses match the needs of the labor market, etc., which are not necessarily the things that British university management needs to pay attention to in the past.

  • Teaching

  • Assessment and feedback

  • Academic support

  • Non-continuation

  • Employment or further study

  • Highly skilled-employment or further study

Whether British universities can add tuition fees is based on the client's (i.e. student) rating and his or her employment status within 15 months after graduation. The data is collected by a third party organization, not by British universities. As for the highly ranked British universities, whether their student satisfaction is high or not is completely irrelevant. LSE, Southampton and other highly ranked British universities have to write to the British government to explain why the government wants to "adjust" their Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) scores. Look at the Russell Group teaching level rankings, there are high-ranking schools with good TEF scores.  In addition, the cost of British universities is actually closely related to the city where the British university is located, because rent is the largest expense besides tuition fees, but it can differ by 2.5 times in different cities.
